Reliance JioPhone pre-booking: Here's how you can get the 4G VoLTE feature phone

Reliance Jio has resumed sales of its ambitious JioPhone. According to a report by The Economic Times, the telecom company has started sending messages to customers with a link attached to buy the advanced 4G VoLTE feature phone. The link has a code which the customer needs to show at the nearest Jio outlet to get the phone.

In the first phase of sales, Reliance Jio managed to sell around 6 million of Jio phones. Now, the company is targeting close to 10 million customers in the second phase who had shown interest in the phone but could not get it after the device went out of stock. Mukesh Ambani, owner of Reliance Industries (RIL), launched JioPhone in July this year. The company started taking pre-orders for the same in August. However, due to unprecedented demand for the JioPhone, which led to the deliverers being pushed to October 19.

For those who are unaware, the 4G-enabled feature phone is priced at Rs 1,500 which is refundable after a period of three years given users return the device. Those who pre-book the device will have to pay Rs 500 upfront and the rest Rs 1,000 at the time of delivery.

Buy an iPhone 8 with Jio - iPhone monthly plan and get 70% Buyback

Buy an iPhone 8 with Jio - iPhone monthly plan and get 70% Buyback

iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus launched in India the past Friday, and one of the biggest offers on the new Apple phones was the 70 percent buyback guarantee provided by Reliance Jio. The newest telecom carrier on the block, Jio says it will provide buyers of iPhone 8 models in India 70 percent of the value of the handset (minus the applicable taxes) if they stick to the Jio network for a year and then return the phone. Jio will provide the same offer to iPhone X buyers when the flagship Apple handset, whose price crosses Rs. 1 lakh, launched in India in November.

While the iPhone 8 buyback offer will obviously help Jio sell more units from its platforms, it will also help Apple expand in India, where its market share is 3 percent. Apart from possibly lifting Apple sales in India, the move could also draw more high-paying customers to the Jio network.
Cupertino, California-based Apple is keen to sell more iPhones in India, one of the world's biggest smartphone markets, but the high cost of its handsets has kept higher-end iPhones in particular out of the reach of hundreds of millions of Indians.

The deal with Reliance, an oil-to-telecoms conglomerate, is Apple's latest attempt to grow in India's competitive smartphone market, similar to the way it boosted sales in countries like the United States by partnering with network operators to subsidise the cost of the phone.

At Rs. 64,000 ($980) the upfront cost of the iPhone 8 is still high however, and some remain sceptical that a buyback offer will do much to boost Apple's market share in India where iPhone users can already easily resell old iPhones for 50 to 60 percent of their cost in the second-hand market.

"Older and more affordable iPhones will still make for a bulk of Apple's sales in India," said Tarun Pathak, analyst at tech research firm Counterpoint. "People want their phones but not necessarily the latest and the most expensive ones."

This is the first time such a hefty buyback offer has been made for an iPhone in India, Akash Ambani, the son of India's richest man, Reliance chairman Mukesh Ambani, said in Mumbai on Friday when unveiling the deal.

"We're excited to be building so many new relationships in India," Apple CEO Tim Cook said in a brief pre-recorded video.

For Apple, growing in India is crucial as growth slows at home and in China. The deal will place Apple's iPhones in Reliance and Jio retail stores in 900 cities across India, giving the company a chance to boost its meagre 3 percent market share and close the gap with market leader Samsung Electronics.

Data game
For Reliance, this is the first time the company is offering such a hefty buyback price in a bid to win over high-spending Apple fans whose hunger for data, the company hopes, will boost revenues.

The offer, which will likely boost Reliance's average revenue per user, will be available to Jio customers who buy the iPhone and subscribe to its Rs. 799 ($12.22) monthly package for 12 months.

By comparison, the industry's monthly average revenue per user was just Rs. 80 in the quarter ended-June, according to recent regulatory data.

While there is no penalty for downgrading to a cheaper plan or leaving the contract mid-way through, customers who do so will lose out on the buyback offer.

This is unlike contract deals in some Western countries where the total cost of a phone is subsidised and there is a penalty for dropping contracts mid-way.

With the Apple deal at the high end of the spectrum, Jio is also working to woo cost-conscious aspirational smartphone buyers at the lower end with a $23 4G phone that blurs the line between a smartphone and a traditional feature phone.

The company, which has signed on 128 million users in less than a year via cut-price deals, is now eyeing between 250-300 million customers in the next two years, a source has told Reuters.

Nokia 6 review :- Offers pure Android experience with good build quality

Nokia 6 review :- Offers pure Android experience with good build quality

Critic Rating3/5
User Rating4.2/5
Top Features

*Good build quality
*Pure Android experience
*Affordable price

Much has been said and written about how the once-loved by one and all smartphone brand Nokia was late in embracing Android. As the old adage goes, better late than never and Nokia made its comeback to the smartphone segment with the launch of Nokia 6. It is the first Android-powered device to come with Nokia branding. Nokia smartphones are being manufactured by Finnish company HMD Global. Nokia 6 is a well-constructed smartphone and it falls in the budget smartphone category as it is priced at Rs 14,999. The device offers decent specifications and will also receive an update for Android 8.0 Oreo, but will this help Nokia in regaining its market share? We try and find out. We reviewed the Nokia 6 to see where its stands in the overcrowded Indian smartphone market.

Design and display
Nokia 6 became the talk of the town and aroused considerable amount of interest since its global launch in January this year. The smartphone has garnered lot of appreciation for its design and we second that opinion. Nokia 6 is a sleek yet solid smartphone which flaunts a metal unibody. The device comes with round edges with antenna lines running across the top and bottom end of the phone. The smartphone has a slightly curved rear panel with matte finish which offers a firm grip to the user. The company has also added metal highlights to the device which further enhance the look and feel of the smartphone.

The right side of the device houses the volume rockers and power button, while the left houses a SIM card slot. The top band has the 3.5mm audio jack and the bottom has the micro USB charging port and speakers. The rear of the device features a 16MP camera with LED flash placed in vertical position along with the Nokia logo in the centre. The front panel comes with a 5.5-inch full HD 2.5D curved glass display. The right corner of the display has an 8MP front facing camera placed next to the Nokia branding. The bottom has soft keys along with the pill shaped home button which also doubles up as a fingerprint sensor. Considering its price segment, Nokia 6 scores pretty well in the design segment.

Coming to the display, Nokia 6 features a 5.5-inch full HD display with 1080x1920 pixel resolution. The display comes with conventional 16:9 aspect ratio and is coated with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 which makes it scratch resistant. The bezels around the display are pretty thick and we feel too much space is wasted there. Other than this, the display quality is really good. It offers sharp, vibrant, crisp display quality and the colour reproduction is also very lively. The viewing angles were also fine and outdoor visibility wasn't an issue either.

Performance and camera
Nokia 6 is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 processor paired with 3GB of RAM and 32GB internal storage. Users can further expand storage up to 256GB by adding a microSD card. The smartphone is pretty good when it comes to doing daily tasks such as checking emails, browsing the internet and scanning through social media. However, if you are looking for something extra this device is not for you. We tried playing some heavy games like Modern Combat 5, Total War Battles: Kingdom and noticed lag in the performance. The device works well with light games but if you're a gamer, then the device will not make the cut. Other than gaming, multi-tasking was also not smooth and we witnessed lags while launching the camera and image processing.

We also ran a few benchmark tests on the device. While it scored 687 and 2,869 in single core, and multi core of Geekbench 4, it got a score of 47,121 on Antutu. The speakers of Nokia 6 are located at the bottom. This means that the audio output could be blocked if the device is being used in landscape mode. Audio output was pretty decent on both loudspeaker and headphones. The company has also incorporated Dolby Surround Sound mode which enhances the audio experience. Along with audio quality, call quality was also fine and the signal reception was also good. Nokia 6 is backed by a 3,000 mAh battery, which is satisfactory for smartphones in this price segment. The battery easily lasts a day of moderate usage on a single charge. However, if you love streaming Netflix or Amazon Prime then you might need a charger twice a day.

Nokia 6 runs Android 7.1.1 Nougat out-of-the -box. Just like Motorola smartphones, the Nokia 6 also offers stock Android experience. If you want a clean user interface without any bloatware then can consider Nokia 6. The company has already announced that the smartphone will get Android O update along with all the security patches. The software experience is pretty smooth and it has all the features of Nougat 7.1 such as split screen view among others.

For photography, Nokia 6 comes with a 16MP rear camera with f/2.0 aperture and LED flash. There is also an 8MP front snapper with f/2.0 for clicking selfies. Users can open the camera from the main screen and can also launch it by double tapping on the power button. The camera app is pretty clean and all modes are available on the main screen. The app also has a hidden menu which offers more controls to the users. Images captured using Nokia 6 came out quite well. While taking photos you will notice a yellow tint but that it absent in the images. Outdoor photography was good, with ample detailing and vibrant colour reproduction. However, images captured indoor turned out to be grainy and didn't impress us. The selfie camera was also fine and same as any other smartphone in this price segment.

Verdict

The Nokia 6 is a decent attempt from HMD Global in order to revive the Nokia brand. The smartphone offers a pretty good design and stock Android is an added advantage. However, it lacks a bit in the performance segment. Priced at Rs 14,999, the smartphone will face tough competition from Moto G5 Plus and Lenovo P2 which come at a similar price tag but offer better specifications.

Motorola's upcoming phone display could self-heal scratches.

Motorola could launch smartphone with self-healing screen: Report

Lenovo-owned Motorola is known for launching smartphones with shatterproof displays. Now the company plans to launch the phone with a new self-healing screen technology, which could fix scratches on the device's display. A patent first spotted by Slash Gear shows that Motorola has designed a self-healing technology, which would detect a crack in the display and notify the user.

Lenovo-owned Motorola is known for launching smartphones with shatterproof displays. Now the company plans to launch the phone with a new self-healing screen technology, which could fix scratches on the device’s display. A patent first spotted by SlashGear shows that Motorola has designed a self-healing technology, which would detect a crack in the display and notify the user.

Once the user would know that the damage has been done, heat could be applied to the glass to repair beyond minor cuts and scratches. Though, in its patent filing, Motorola said that the method should not be treated as the perfect solution. The screen is the most delicate part on the smartphone. If it accidentally breaks, users have no option but to consider buying a new device or spend thousands on a replacement screen.

This wouldn’t be the first time we’re hearing about a “self-healing” smartphone. In fact, LG was the first smartphone company to launch a smartphone with self-repairing elements. Its G Flex 2, which made its debut in 2015, had a “self-healing” back that’s claimed to repair cuts and scratches in less than 24 hours.

Earlier this year, in April, Business Insider reported that the Chemists at the University of California, Riverside, created a new materiel for a self-healing smartphone. The report said that scientists created a polymer that can stretch up to 50 times its original size. A self-healing material, when carved into two parts, will stitch automatically within 24 hours, just like a human skin. It’s being estimated that this new material will be commercially used by smartphone vendors by 2020.
