Buy an iPhone 8 with Jio - iPhone monthly plan and get 70% Buyback

Buy an iPhone 8 with Jio - iPhone monthly plan and get 70% Buyback

iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus launched in India the past Friday, and one of the biggest offers on the new Apple phones was the 70 percent buyback guarantee provided by Reliance Jio. The newest telecom carrier on the block, Jio says it will provide buyers of iPhone 8 models in India 70 percent of the value of the handset (minus the applicable taxes) if they stick to the Jio network for a year and then return the phone. Jio will provide the same offer to iPhone X buyers when the flagship Apple handset, whose price crosses Rs. 1 lakh, launched in India in November.

While the iPhone 8 buyback offer will obviously help Jio sell more units from its platforms, it will also help Apple expand in India, where its market share is 3 percent. Apart from possibly lifting Apple sales in India, the move could also draw more high-paying customers to the Jio network.
Cupertino, California-based Apple is keen to sell more iPhones in India, one of the world's biggest smartphone markets, but the high cost of its handsets has kept higher-end iPhones in particular out of the reach of hundreds of millions of Indians.

The deal with Reliance, an oil-to-telecoms conglomerate, is Apple's latest attempt to grow in India's competitive smartphone market, similar to the way it boosted sales in countries like the United States by partnering with network operators to subsidise the cost of the phone.

At Rs. 64,000 ($980) the upfront cost of the iPhone 8 is still high however, and some remain sceptical that a buyback offer will do much to boost Apple's market share in India where iPhone users can already easily resell old iPhones for 50 to 60 percent of their cost in the second-hand market.

"Older and more affordable iPhones will still make for a bulk of Apple's sales in India," said Tarun Pathak, analyst at tech research firm Counterpoint. "People want their phones but not necessarily the latest and the most expensive ones."

This is the first time such a hefty buyback offer has been made for an iPhone in India, Akash Ambani, the son of India's richest man, Reliance chairman Mukesh Ambani, said in Mumbai on Friday when unveiling the deal.

"We're excited to be building so many new relationships in India," Apple CEO Tim Cook said in a brief pre-recorded video.

For Apple, growing in India is crucial as growth slows at home and in China. The deal will place Apple's iPhones in Reliance and Jio retail stores in 900 cities across India, giving the company a chance to boost its meagre 3 percent market share and close the gap with market leader Samsung Electronics.

Data game
For Reliance, this is the first time the company is offering such a hefty buyback price in a bid to win over high-spending Apple fans whose hunger for data, the company hopes, will boost revenues.

The offer, which will likely boost Reliance's average revenue per user, will be available to Jio customers who buy the iPhone and subscribe to its Rs. 799 ($12.22) monthly package for 12 months.

By comparison, the industry's monthly average revenue per user was just Rs. 80 in the quarter ended-June, according to recent regulatory data.

While there is no penalty for downgrading to a cheaper plan or leaving the contract mid-way through, customers who do so will lose out on the buyback offer.

This is unlike contract deals in some Western countries where the total cost of a phone is subsidised and there is a penalty for dropping contracts mid-way.

With the Apple deal at the high end of the spectrum, Jio is also working to woo cost-conscious aspirational smartphone buyers at the lower end with a $23 4G phone that blurs the line between a smartphone and a traditional feature phone.

The company, which has signed on 128 million users in less than a year via cut-price deals, is now eyeing between 250-300 million customers in the next two years, a source has told Reuters.

  • iPhone X and iPhone 8 models were launched on Tuesday
iPhone X has officially been launched, along with the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus. While the tech industry drools over the new iPhones and their features, there is major stuff happening with older iPhones as well. Models such as iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus have received price cuts in India, which will make them more attractive options to those looking to get their hands on an Apple phone without spending a sum that burns a hole in their pocket. On the other hand, the iPhone SE - the cheapest model in Apple's portfolio - has not received a price cut yet.

iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus price cuts in India

Starting with the iPhone 7 price cut, the 32GB storage variant of the smartphone was earlier available for Rs. 56,200 and the 128GB variant was offered by the company at Rs. 65,200. After the price cut, the former model is available for purchase at Rs. 49,000, while the latter can be purchased at Rs. 58,000, as seen on the company's India website.

On the other hand, the 32GB variant of the iPhone 7 Plus, which was earlier available for Rs. 67,300 is now available for Rs. 59,000. The 128GB variant of the smartphone, which was earlier priced at Rs. 76,200 is now available at a price of Rs. 68,000.

Coming to the price cuts in the company's home country US, post the launch of iPhone X and new iPhone 8 models, Apple has slashed the starting price of iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone 7, and the iPhone 7 Plus by $100 (roughly Rs. 6,400). The US pricing of the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus now starts from $549 (roughly Rs. 35,100) and $669 (roughly Rs. 42,800). On the other hand, the pricing for the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus starts from $449 (roughly Rs. 28,750) and $549 respectively.

Further, Apple has slashed the starting price of iPhone SE in the US by $50 (roughly Rs. 3,200) to $349 (roughly Rs. 22,300). Interestingly, in India, the company has decided to retain the pricing of the 32GB and 128GB storage variants of the smartphone at Rs. 26,000 and Rs. 35,000 respectively.

Considering that the iPhone X will be made available in India with a starting price of Rs. 89,000, it might not be a bad idea to look at some of the earlier generation models that offer good features at affordable prices post the price cut.
